Oscar Night

Original Score: Gustavo Santaolalla, Brokeback Mountain
Best Adapted Screenplay: Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, Brokeback Mountain
Best Director: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain

Three Oscars ain't bad. I wish Brokeback had won Best Picture, too. But I haven't even seen Crash, so I guess I should.

I love that Philip Seymour Hoffman won for Capote. And George Clooney for Syrianna.

The weirdest moment: Reese Witherspoon saying, at least three times, that her character, Ruth Carter Cash in Walk the Line, was a "real woman." A not-so-subtle dig at Felicity Huffman's character in Transamerica.

you think it was a dig, and not just her emphasizing the whole biopic angle?

Yeah, I took it more as "finally I got to play a woman with substance instead of a fluffy little blonde thang!" Hmmm. You could be right, Peter, but I hope not.

AD and A: you may have something there.
Don't get me wrong, though. I *heart* Reese, but I wanted Felicity to win.

yeah, i haven't seen transamerica, so i can't really judge who i'd want to win there. . . .

it was nice to see rw get away from the legally blonde franchise though. :-P

"Crash" definitely deserved Best Picture. I was rooting for it from the start. You should rent this one ASAP. It's moving, thought provoking and some of the best performances I've seen in ages. Thandie Newton not being nominated for best supporting actress is a crime against humanity. I love Catherine Keener, but she had nothing to do in Capote.

While I enjoyed Crash and thought Thandie Newton, Ryan Phillipe, and Terrence Howard were especially spectacular, the whole film smacked too much of Magnolia with a social justice bent to me.

I'm in agreement about Crash being an amazing movie. I was rooting for Matt Dillon, too. I didn't think about it in terms of Magnolia, maybe because I saw Crash first.

Reese Witherspoon was very good in WTL, and even better in Election. I thought she was being a little too emphatic on a "real woman," as well. I'm also tired of her chorus "I'm from Tennessee," especially when another Tennessee blonde (even if not a real blonde!) had already been up on the stage--and of course I refer to the incomparable Ms. Parton.

I thought Crash was a fine feature presentation.
Brokeback was art--a Picture.

Absolutely no contest in my mind, so it's good to see people (Collin, Pamela) who disagree.

Interesting comments, all.
Aimee: yes, hope to run in to you at AWP. Say Hi if our paths cross. I'll try to make it to one of your panels.

Yeah, I thought that RW was saying she was real, not just celebrity image. But I wouldn't put too much weight in those at-the-mike remarks. Some people seem to have it together, others do not.
